Kowalski's to open new store in Shoreview

Excelsior-based Oppidan is partnering with Kowalski’s Market to build the grocer a new 25,000-square-foot store in Shoreview.

Oppidan will redevelop the former Rainbow Foods site at 441 Highway 96. Kowalski’s will own the 10.6-acre site, which it will purchase from Oppidan upon completion, the developer said last week in a prepared statement announcing the project.

“Having originally developed this site back in 1994, we are intimately familiar with its opportunities and are eager to apply that knowledge as Kowalski’s updates and enhances it,” said Jay Moore, property developer for Oppidan, in prepared statement.

The Shoreview location will be the grocer’s 11th store in the Twin Cities. The estimated market value for the property is $6.84 million, according to Ramsey County property records.

The site will also include a 43,000-square-foot production facility, which will replace Kowalski’s current facility in Mahtomedi.  The grocer will employ about 200 people at the store and production facility, said Kris Kowalski Christensen, chief operating officer for the company, in a prepared statement.

The grocer will transfer production operations from Mahtomedi to Shoreview as the new site provides Kowalski’s with more physical space to as the company grows, Kowalski Christensen said.

The developer expects to begin construction of the new Kowalski’s store and production facility in April. The store could open as early as November, the grocer said.
