Oppidan to redevelop former Kmart into a Cub Foods

Minnetonka-based Oppidan Investment Co. will redevelop the former Kmart in White Bear Lake into a Cub Foods, the developer announced Monday.

Oppidan’s project, referred to as White Bear Marketplace, sits on 12.8 acres on the northwest quadrant of Interstate 694 and White Bear Avenue, just north of Maplewood Mall. The new Cub Foods will be the first corporate Cub built since 2008. The development will also include a Cub Liquor and Planet Fitness.

“Kmart closed its store in White Bear Lake several years ago, and, since then, the site has become a priority for an updated look at what is undeniably the community’s most visible intersection,” Paul Tucci, property developer for Oppidan, said in a prepared statement. “We’re excited to not only redevelop this site with a new, modern look and to bring additional desired retail to White Bear Lake but also to partner with Cub.”

Future retail tenants are expected to join the development later.

White Bear Marketplace will include three times more green space than the site currently offers. The development will also have bike racks and a landscaped walkway.

Construction on the new store, which will require demolition of parts of the Kmart, will begin in the spring. The project is expected to be ready by November.
