Maple Grove Goodwill Store 13644 80th Circle N., Maple Grove

Type: Retail Size: 20,600 square feet Developer: Oppidan Inc.

Details: Minnetonka-based Oppidan has preliminary approval to build a Goodwill/Easter Seals of Minnesota retail store in the parking lot of the shuttered Maple Grove Cinema theater.

The Maple Grove planning commission gave its unanimous approval this month for development-stage plans for the project. In April the bank-owned, highly visible site along Interstate 94 was divided as part of a plan to convert the 33,000-square-foot former theater into a WhirlyBall facility -- an activity in which participants use specially designed bumper cars in an enclosed rink to play a modified form of lacrosse.

The new Goodwill will be the second in Maple Grove and only 3.5 miles from the existing store on Dunkirk Lane and County Road 30. Mike Brandt, a project manager for engineering firm MFRA Inc., told the commission that the proximity of the two stores to one another is the closest for any of the retailers' 25 Twin Cities locations, adding that demand is high in Maple Grove for Goodwill's used merchandise.

The company said the new Maple Grove store will employ up to 30 people and will feature its prototypical architectural design of burnished brick with stucco accents along the top of the 20,600-square-foot structure.

To take advantage of its location, a permit to place a monument sign facing the freeway will be sought .
